Licorice root is commonly used to treat sore throats, coughs, heartburn, and ulcers. Due to its sweet flavor, licorice is added to herbal blends to mask the taste of bitter remedies. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis effects are similar to cortisone, and it is also a gentle laxative, lowering stomach acid levels. Avoid licorice if you have high blood pressure, kidney disease or are pregnant.
